The Rise of Burna Boy

Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy is a Nigerian Afrofusion singer and songwriter. He is the grandson of Benson Idonije, who hail from Mbiama, Rivers State, Nigeria.

2018 was unarguably the best year so far for the 27 year old music star, career wise. From sold out shows to tours to having over 890,000 monthly streams on one of the worlds largest music streaming platforms.

The Nigerian Afrofusion singer and songwriter rose to stardom when his hit song “Like To Party” was released in 2012 after he had released abeg abeg abeg two years earlier. Burna, the public and the media’s attention. He climbed higher on the charts. The song was a good hit because the fizz it created never ceased to exist. From being just an inner-city musician, he turned into an international celebrity

He has not had an easy career since then as everyone is bound to have ups and downs, but he has proven time and time again to his fans -who he christened The “Outsiders”- and music enthusiasts all around the world that his sound is not one that set backs will phase out so easily.

I’m 2018, he sold out the almost 5000-capacity O2 Brixton Academy in London during his Life On The Outside tour. His outstanding features on songs like Heavens Gate with Lily Allen, All my Life with Major Lazer and singles like Yé, Gbona, On the Low had fans stepping to his music all through 2018.

Most recently, Soundcity MVP Awards named him the Artiste of the year and this was one of the four awards he received during the ceremony with the other three being the Listener’s choice award , Best Male MVP and Song of the year.
