World 100m hurdles record-holder Tobi Amusan will proudly lead the Nigerian delegation at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on Friday, July 26. This historic moment marks the first time in two decades that a track and field athlete will be Nigeria’s flagbearer since Mary Onyali at the Athens 2004 Games.
The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Sport, made the exciting announcement on Tuesday morning. Tobi, who has cemented her status as the world’s fastest woman in the 100m hurdles, set a new record of 12.40 seconds at the 2024 Jamaica Athletics Invitational in May, defeating reigning world champion Danielle Williams of Jamaica and American Christina Clemens.
In addition to Tobi’s remarkable achievement, the NOC has named badminton player Anuoluwapo Opeyori as Nigeria’s general team captain for the Paris Olympics. Anuoluwapo, a prominent figure in Nigerian sports since 2017, won both the African Championships and African Games singles titles in 2019 and competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. As general team captain, he will lead and inspire the Nigerian contingent in Paris, leveraging his extensive international experience to guide his teammates towards success.
With Tobi Amusan and Anuoluwapo Opeyori at the helm, Nigeria is set to make a powerful impact at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Stay tuned for what promises to be an unforgettable event!
